METAL ROOFING AND SIDING

Metal Roofing Panels

EasyFrame Metal Buildings consist of 100% factory roll-formed parts, greatly reducing the need for onsite fabrication.

What is a Metal Roof Panel?

Metal roofing panels have been a workhorse in the construction industry since the turn of the century. Initially, small pieces of copper and zinc were hand-formed by craftsmen. The slow and manual process created beautiful but often price-prohibitive roofs.

Over time, rolling manufacturing lines were introduced. This mechanization enabled a quicker and more efficient production and installation process as roll-formed sheets routinely covered a 3’ wide section of the roof with one panel running from eave to ridge.

This advancement made metal roofing both durable and affordable. The only piece left of the puzzle was the appearance. In the early days, roll-formed panels had a simple rounded corrugation, and finish options were limited at best. But how the industry has changed! Today's savvy consumers can choose from multiple profiles, paint systems, substrates and extensive color selections. Thanks to these advances, metal roofing is one of the most cost effective, beautiful and environmentally friendly roofing choices available.

Standing Seam Metal Roof Panels

A standing seam roof system, also classified as concealed fastener panels, utilizes a series of adjoining panels that are connected by raised seams (or vertical legs). Seam heights vary, but are typically 1 to 2 ½ inches tall and allow the panels to snap together without any exposed fasteners. In addition to providing a sleek, modern look, standing seam roofs allow panels to expand and contract with changing temperatures, helping them to last longer and cause less wear and tear on the roof deck. For residential applications, most standing seam panels snap together while others require mechanical seaming. Mechanical seamed panels provide greater strength and wind uplift capabilities.

Medallion I and Medallion II are older models of architectural standing seam systems and utilize separate batten caps that are installed over adjoining roofing panels. Medallion I features a narrow batten cap while Medallion II features a wider cap. Both Medallion systems are installed over solid decking. These panels are better suited for application like eyebrows over windows or other accent installations. For most homeowners, newer standing seam models such as Meridian or Medallion-Lok are a better option in terms of weather resistance and performance.

There are two main methods to attach standing seam panels at the eave of a building: fixed and architectural. As might be expected, the fixed attachment method consists of attaching screws through the panel and into eave trim positioned under the roof panel. Conversely, architectural eave details don’t involve the use of visible fasteners. The photos to the right show fixed and architectural installations.

Exposed Fastener Metal Roof Panels

The most economical form of metal roofing, exposed fastener roofing, consists of overlapping panels that are fastened directly to the roof deck or framing through the face of the metal. They are called “exposed” because the fastener head remains visible once installed. However, fastener heads are painted the same color as the roofing panels to help make them less apparent. Most exposed fastener panels are typically 36” wide, meaning that fewer panels (and less labor) will be needed to cover the roof area.

Retrofit & Recover

For commercial property owners confronted with aging or deteriorating roofs, a complete tear-off and replacement may not be an economical or viable long-term solution. This is especially true for roofs with 1/4:12 slope or greater with conventional membranes that require ongoing maintenance due to moisture damage and UV degradation. Owners of 30-40 year old pre-engineered buildings also benefit greatly from a new roof that installs directly over existing metal panels. Fortunately, recover and retrofit systems like metal-over-metal or metal-over-shingles can provide the benefits of a standing seam metal roof without the hassle of replacing the roof entirely. Our systems can be adapted to the existing roof’s structural support system to provide long-term life expectancy and reduced life-cycle costs while also enhancing the property’s curb appeal.

Specialty Panels

Specialty roofing panels are a growing trend in the metal roofing industry.

Historically metal roofing options have been limited for designers and building owners that desire the appearance of conventional roofing products like asphalt shingles, shake, ceramic tile or even vertical rib metal panels.

Thankfully the landscape has changed and now there are a host of specialty metal roofing panels that have the physical appearance of conventional roofing.

For example, people that like the look of an asphalt shingle but desire a much longer service life often find stone coated shingles to be a great solution. Ceramic tiles have also been a mainstay but are incredibly heavy systems and prone to breakage. New systems mirror the ceramic look but offer a much longer service life.

Pigments

Pigments are the coating ingredients responsible for color. Paint is created when the pigment is dispersed into the binder/resin. To further explain dispersion, think about a can of household paint.

If you open a can of paint that hasn’t been touched in months, you will likely notice a layer of liquid on top of a more solid layer of material that has settled. The top layer of liquid is the binder. Before using the paint, you must again disperse (mix or stir) the pigment into the binder.

Austin_Hall_238T_Copper_Durring_1

Binder/Resins

The resin is what holds, or binds, the pigment together and protects the coating from UV degradation. Higher quality resins provide the greatest protection against panel chalk and fade. Conversely, coatings produced from lower quality resins are more apt to fade and chalk. These failures occur when the binder breaks down and no longer holds the pigment together.

The three most common resins for metal roofing and siding are Polyester, Silicone Modified Polyester, and PVDF (commonly known by the Kynar 500® trade name). These coatings also have a well-defined good, better and best performance rating.

Resin Performance

Polyester coatings are considered low-end on the quality spectrum and are most often utilized for interior applications, such as liner panels or interior design accents.

Silicone Modified Polyesters (SMP) are an improvement over straight polyester coatings and represent a performance alternative between polyester and PVDF coatings. However, it is important to note that SMP performance simply cannot match the long-term performance of PVDF coatings, especially for darker colors.

PVDF (Kynar 500®) coatings provide superior protection against fade and chalk and are the industry standard for architectural applications. Quality focused manufacturers, like McElroy Metal, offer PVDF coatings across their entire product lines from post frame to pre-engineered to residential roofing. It is important to note that some manufacturers do not offer PVDF paint systems. If long-term quality is important, it’s always best to ask questions about the coating early in your project planning.

Solvents

The third primary coating ingredient, solvents, is responsible for ensuring the paint has the desired viscosity to be properly applied. Solvents disperse the pigment. When the coating is applied, the solvent evaporates, allowing the resin and pigment to create the desired layer of coating and and be able to dry. In the case of metal roofing and siding, the solvent evaporates (burns-off from heat) during the coil coating process.

Coil Coating Process

Once pigments, resins and solvents have been used to properly formulate the paint, the coating is applied to the metal coil. The coil coating process includes cleaning the metal coils and the application of both primer and top coats that are then cured with heat. McElroy Metal coils are coated by Precoat Metals and Steelscape. To gain more insight on the coil coating process, visit this link.

The Importance of Quality Coatings

Coatings, or paint systems, play an essential role in the overall performance of a painted metal panel. Since metal roofing and siding panels are continually exposed to nature’s elements, care must be taken to ensure the selected coating system matches long-term performance and aesthetic expectations.

Specialty Products

Specialty Coatings - Prints

Advanced coating technologies have resulted in some exciting developments. Coil coated prints create multi-layered effects resulting in unique color combinations to create panels that can simulate slate, wood shake, COR-TEN Steel, wood grains, and camo. All McElroy prints utilize PVDF coatings, with the exception of Mossy Oak Camo which has a polyester coating.

Benefits of High Performing Coatings

As indicated above, high performing coatings are important when long-term performance and aesthetics are important. Warranties are also a consideration when selecting a metal panel. Consumers often associate warranty with dependability and performance.

This is not necessarily the case. Just because a warranty has an extended time frame (45 years or even a “lifetime”), it does not necessarily mean that the warranty is better or that the product offers better performance. We encourage you to fully read and understand your supplier’s warranties.
