Silicone Modified Polyester Coatings
While McElroy Metal proudly leads with our Kynar 500® paint system for projects demanding the highest levels of fade and chalk resistance, we also offer a high-performing, economical alternative: our Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP) system.
SMP-Silicone Modified Polyester Coatings
SMP coatings provide a durable finish with excellent resistance to weathering, scratching, and UV exposure. These systems offer a good balance of performance and value, making them a popular choice for customers seeking long-lasting beauty at a more budget-conscious price point.
Our SMP finishes are available in a variety of attractive colors and backed by solid warranties, giving you confidence in both appearance and performance.
When to Consider SMP:
- When cost is a primary factor
- For buildings using white, light, or earth-tone colors
- In environments with lower UV exposure or less severe weather conditions
SMP finishes are available exclusively on our exposed fastened panels. Standing seam systems typically require enhanced performance due to their use in more demanding applications, so we specify our premium Kynar 500® paint system for those products to ensure superior durability and color retention.

Benefits of High Performing Substrates and Coatings
As indicated above, high performing substrates and coatings are important when long-term performance and aesthetics are important. Warranties are also a consideration when selecting a metal panel. Consumers often associate warranty with dependability and performance.
This is not necessarily the case. Just because a warranty has an extended time frame (45 years or even a “lifetime”), it does not necessarily mean that the warranty is better or that the product offers better performance. We encourage you to fully read and understand your supplier’s warranties.
